This fabulous game reserve is on the northern edge of most Kenya safaris - it is also the gateway to Kenya's Northern Frontier. We spent 2+ full days here, mostly in the Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves. The Samburu area has many "northern" species and subspecies of mammals and birds, typical of the dry areas of the Horn of Africa. Examples include the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, Gunther's Dikdik, Gerenuk, Somali Ostrich, Vulturine Guineafowl, and many others. Big game and birds are plentiful and generally easy to see because the countryside is dry and very open. After Samburu, we drove into the deserts of the north. After one stop at the spectacular Desert Rose Resort, our next major stop was Lake Turkana. Scroll down for photos of Samburu; for photos of the next stop (Lake Turkana), click here.
