This was the last leg of a fantastic trip. It included two days at Lake Baringo, a brief stop at Lake Bogoria, two days at Lake Nakuru, and a brief stop at Lake Naivasha on the last day to break up our drive back to Nairobi. Technically, I could also include Lake Turkana here, which is certainly a Rift Valley lake, but that is such a special area that it gets its own gallery (here). The first three photos in this gallery are from Lake Turkana, just to acknowledge that it indeed could be placed here as well.
Lake Bogoria is one of two freshwater lakes in Kenya's Rift Valley (Naivasha is the other). There is not much in the way of big game around lake Baringo, but because of its varied habitats, it is one of the world's great birding destinations. Lake Bogoria is a marvel - where Kenya's highest concentration of flamingos currently resides. Lake Nakuru also has large numbers of flamingos, but for a number of reasons they have mostly dispersed in recent years to other lakes (mostly Bogoria). It remains, however, another one of the world's great birding sites. And now, Lake Nakuru National Park is probably almost as well known for big game as for birds, and many are easy to see and photograph in the park's mostly open terrain. Among the larger mammals of note are introduced black and white rhinos (the latter are easy to see), Rothschild's Giraffes, Buffalo, Zebra, Impala, and more. Lake Naivasha is also tremendously bird-rich, with a slightly different suite of birds that prefer fresh water.
As mentioned in the Highlights gallery, a highlight of this portion of the trip was an unplanned visit on our last day to a school outside of Nakuru, a school that I had actually helped to build on a program called INTERALP, way back in 1976. With some luck and help from "Dr Google", we found the school and made an unannounced visit, which resulted in an incredibly warm welcome from teachers and students alike. Read more about that in some of the captions to photos below.
