The DelMarVa Peninsula (Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia) is an interesting part of the country with beautiful coastlines on the Atalntic Ocean on one side, and Chesapeake Bay on the other. In the interior, there are forests and marsh lands, and numerous wildlife refuges. On this page I have photos from a few trips to Chincoteague Island and National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and Blackwater NWR. There are photos from three trips to Chincoteague (2 in Winter and 1 in Spring), and just one short stop at Blackwater. Also, on my drive home from one trip, I got a permit to stop on one of the islands of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge & Tunnels. The bridge is actually three bridges with two long tunnels in the middle of the bay, so boats can pass over the tunnel sections. Overall, the bridges plus tunnels are 17.6 miles long. When a bridge segment ends and the road goes down into a tunnel, there are man-made "islands" with maintenance buildings and pull-off areas. So there are four islands total, one at each end of the two tunnels. The bridge management company allows you to stop at Island #4, which is the island closest to the north end of the bridge. Since the islands are out in the middle of what is essentially open ocean where Chesapeake Bay starts entering the sea, one can sometimes see pelagic birds like Shearwaters from the islands. In the winter, there are always lots of sea ducks that are not easy to see from land. I had a fantastic time and saw lots of interesting species. On a separate page, I post scenes from an amazing wildlife spectacle a little further north on the DelMarVa Peninsula: the springtime mating of tens of thousands of Horseshoe Crabs on Delaware Bay NE of Dover, and the millions of shorebirds that feed on their eggs. See this link for photos of that remarkable occurrence.
